A Cashless Future in Phnom Penh: Exploring the Factors to Mobile Banking Adoption

Supervised by Assoc. Prof. Koh Yeok Boon Roland · April 2025

Abstract

A Cashless Future in Phnom Penh explores the determinants driving mobile banking adoption in Cambodia’s capital. This study employs a quantitative survey of 496 mobile banking users to examine how technological factors—such as perceived usefulness, ease of use, relative advantage, compatibility, and observability combine with social influence to shape consumer attitudes and future usage intentions. The findings indicate that while technological attributes significantly enhance perceptions of utility and convenience, social factors and trust equally contribute to building favorable attitudes toward mobile banking.

In particular, the clear benefits of faster transactions and lower costs underscore the role of relative advantage, whereas user-friendly interfaces mitigate perceived complexity and foster adoption among diverse demographic groups. However, challenges such as low financial literacy and infrastructural limitations continue to impede widespread acceptance.

The study recommends that financial institutions and policymakers invest in improving digital infrastructures, designing intuitive platforms, and implementing trust-building measures through targeted outreach and community engagement. These initiatives are essential to support a sustainable cashless ecosystem and enhance financial inclusion in Phnom Penh’s rapidly evolving urban economy.
